From November 10 to 12, 2025, the city of Hiroshima, Japan, hosted the international conference of the World association of lesson studies (WALS 2025). For the first time, teachers from rural hub schools in Kazakhstan took part in its work.
Kazakhstan was represented at the conference by 14 teachers from rural schools in Turkestan, Kyzylorda, East Kazakhstan, and Abai regions. The teachers presented their own research on the introduction and development of the Lesson Study approach in the educational process of rural schools.
The teachers' participation was made possible by systematic methodological support under the Fund for Sustainable Development of Education's project "Capacity building of rural hub schools," implemented by the Center of pedagogical excellence of the Autonomous Educational Organization "Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools," which represents Kazakhstan in the World association of lesson studies.
In total, the WALS 2025 program included 249 presentations by Kazakhstani teachers, one of the largest delegations among the countries participating in the conference.
WALS is an international platform that brings together researchers, experts, and practicing teachers every year to exchange experience and study effective approaches to teaching. At the center of the conference is the Lesson Study methodology, a collaborative approach to studying lessons in which teachers design, teach, and analyze classes in order to improve teaching methods and increase student engagement.
The participation of rural teachers from Kazakhstan in a conference of this level demonstrates the growing research potential of educators and opens new opportunities for introducing international educational practices in the country's rural schools.
